Name: Dr. Sid Hammerback

Fandom: CSI: New York

Word Count: 220

Picture prompt: Write a ficlet inspired by the following image: Ring/Book.

After his wife’s death, Sid paid special attention to his wedding ring, regarding it in some fashion, as the only surviving one left of a matching pair, just like him. It wasn’t alive, but the thought was pertinent and true all the same. He had bought the ring as a pair, and they had hung around inside their boxes in his pocket for weeks before he had proposed. Even then, so long ago back in his mid to late teenage years, he had known that those rings would last indefinitely.

The rings were a smooth gold band with some minute detailing; they weren’t cumbersome and fit both husband and wife nicely. Except, now, he still wore his, on his finger, or on a gold chain around his neck, when he didn’t want anyone to know. And hers was melted away, dedicated to rubbish or almost nonexistence along with her body, and the bodies of his two sons.

One morning as he sat pouring over a medical textbook inside the morgue, he slipped the ring off in frustration and placed it in the middle of the pages as he scanned and rescanned them. It fell, sitting up, on what he had been looking for, casting a heart shaped shadow across the paper.

Maybe she wasn’t so lost to him after all.
