Theatrical Muse: Week 168: Question 168
Name: Dr. Sid Hammerback

Fandom: CSI: New York

Word Count: 722

There was an amused and innocent looking smile on Sid Hammerback’s face as he stared at the curly, brown haired woman who stood before him. Stella was smiling in a similar way to how he was, except, she was totally amused, and totally not innocent, so, in response, he cocked his head at her and looked into her eyes.

“You don’t!” the woman said, giving the man a playful shove against the chest, s the partygoers around them continued to mix and mingle, talk, and eat, snack food. Like any party that they had at work, this one had involved pushing aside some empty tables in the area where they normally took their breaks, covering the tables with party food and drinks that people had brought in, and proceeding on to having the actual party.

The Medical Examiner smiled silently, and tucked a strand of curly hair behind the woman’s ear.

“You know I do merengue.” he said with a flourish of his hands in the air, to which she laughed.

“But, I do say this truthfully. I have, in the past, been a student of the great art of ballet!” he exclaimed, putting his hands down to his sides, and grinning. This somewhat enthusiastic exclamation may have been just a little too loud, as Mac, who was standing nearby raised an eyebrow in amusement and questioning.

Blue eyes flashing the man held one of his arms rounded in front of him, near his middle, and raised the other above his head.

“First position. Second position. Third position. Fourth Position. Fifth position. Retiré.” Hammerback said, moving his feet into each position as he spoke, and, having placed his feet back onto the floor, in a normal position, ending with a bow.

“I’ll show you a tours en l’air sometime.” the man said chuckling, more so when Stella greeted him with a grin and a gentle, affectionate, punch on his left arm.

“I believe you. You can be our entertainment next time Sid. Right Mac?” she said, craning her neck a little to look at the Detective, who was nursing his drink with a thoughtful look on his face. Looking up, the man smiled in agreement, and a little bit of warmth crept into his previously silent face.

“I agree.” the man said in reply, and nodding, the brown haired woman turned back to the Medical Examiner, who laughed merrily.

“For sure, for sure. One day, once upon a time, in a land far away from here.” he said, nodding his head slowly up and down.

“Not shy, are you?” Stella questioned, now raising an eyebrow of her own, and smiling suspiciously.

“No, but I daren’t think the costume would be too pleasing.” the man said, looking happy as someone in the room slid a new CD into the player, and put on some more music. Turning to Mac, an action which Stella followed, the three stood together in silence for a moment, appreciating the moment of happiness, before Sid took leave and went to grab himself a drink from one of the tables. Returning quickly, the man raised his cup in the air, grinning happily.

“I do not know who this party is for, or why we are really having it, but I propose a toast.” he said, pausing for dramatic effect, before breathing in, so he could continue.

“To friends.” Hammerback said, a sentiment which was echoed and repeated by the two others, amongst amused faces and pleasant laughter as their raised cups met one another’s in the air and clinked together with a rustle of the plastic that they were made out of. It was a party after all, and parties, called for a departing from the norm, for they all needed a break from being completely who they were. Even if it was just for a little while they all, definitely, needed a break, they all, needed, one time away from everything outside that room and anything that was happening outside it. It didn’t matter whether it was just for a while, they still needed it all the same, still needed that sense of friendship, support, love and freedom. It was poetic, in both a happy and sad kind of way, but they needed the party, and the party needed them, and that was all there was to it.
