Write about mother (your own or someone else's).

There is something about mothers, something about that maternal instinct that they posses, which binds their offspring so close to them, so very close, and, so much so they each is entirely protective of the other. It depends on the lifestyle and situation of the mother and daughter or son involved as to how long that bond stays like that, but if it remains that strong, or close to it, for the long term long run, then that is an ideal thing.

I have that kind of relationship with my mother. Even though she is getting on in years now, she is still as quick as a whip and as sharp as a tack. And I mean that, not in a bad way, but in the sense that she is still a ready challenge to rise up to when playing a game of chess, checkers or even tic tac toe. Both my parents are quite smart people, so that comes as no surprise to me that, now we are all old kinds of people, we can compete at small things like that on a fairly equal plane.

I try to visit my parents often. If I can, I go over to their place for Sunday dinner, or lunch, if I’m working. They haven’t moved into a retirement home, yet, nor do they intended to any time soon, and they still live in the house I grew up in. If they want me to cook, then I am more than happy to, but it more often happens that the meal is already prepared by the time I get there. My mother is like that, she likes to be ready, and on time. Not very finely, but she likes things to run quickly and smoothly. She also likes to keep busy, and the kitchen is one of the places where she can do just that, keep busy.

We talk when we meet up at times like that, or over the phone if I call her or she calls me. We talk about anything really, anything that takes our family, and, if the conversation turns to some more uncomfortable matters, we deal with it in our own way. My mother, she’s gentle like that, and careful too. Kind, gentle, loving and careful would be the things that would sum it all up to me. She’s those things, and more, and that’s part of why I love her. She can always surprise me, and I can do the same to her. We’re mother and son, and the bond that that creates, is a special, loving and strong one. It’s something that can’t be destroyed, no matter what happens.
